Creating the Handle of a Katana’s hilt (Tsuka) with ZModeler in ZBrush

In this quick tutorial, I’m going to show you how to create the intricate woven patterns of a Japanese sword using the ZModeler tool in ZBrush. We are going to focus only on the handle (Tsuka) of the Katana’s hilt (Koshirae)

let's get started

A Bit More About This Tutorial.

Using the Bend Arc deformer

Once you create the pattern for your 'wrap' and have it duplicated, you can use the deformers from the Gizmo 3D to easily change the shape and create complex accessories like this bracelet:

All you have to do is to place the Gizmo in the centre of the volume and click on the gear icon to bring up the deformers, and choose 'Bend Arc':

Using the Green controller you can pull it to deform the mesh in an 'arc' shape. you can control the profile with the white cone and the 'twist' with the yellow one:

Using the Bend curve deformer

Alternatively, you can take the deformation of your wrap pattern to the next level and use the Bend Curve deformer:

The cool thing about this deformer is that you can create deformation points along a curve based on the axis of the volume of your mesh and pull them in any direction. This is a very cool and simple way of creating more complex shapes or even 'posing' a tube-shaped object. You can also use the yellow cone to rotate the mesh on specific points of the curve and also scale them with the white cone:
